Hugo was born and raised in Chicago. Neighborhoods such as Humboldt Park, Albany Park, and Rogers Park are his stomping grounds. His family is Guatemalan and migrated to Chicago due to economic injustices and a civil war. While most youth were playing the latest video games, Hugo was drawing people and manipulating type. Hugo won many art and design contests in elementary school. An art teacher from the Albany Park Multi-Cultural Academy introduced Hugo to print design and airbrushing at the age of 12. One of his first jobs was illustrating for a small publication called New Expressions when he was 14 years old. He then joined a performance art ensemble called Edges. By the time he was 15, Hugo was learning about liberatory education and critical pedagogy. The University of Nebraska hosted a conference called “Pedagogy of the Oppressed” where Edges performed. Since his early adolescence, Hugo has been spray-painting murals and graffiti that promote human rights and social justice. He received a degree in Graphic Design from the International Academy of Design and Technology in 2001 in Chicago. He has exhibited artwork at Elephant Room Inc., WBEZ’s 2nd Annual Winter Block Party, Gallery 54B, Insight Arts, Circuit, The Common Cup, Ginbucks, Dolce Lounge, Bassment and the Colibri gallery in Pilsen. Hugo also participates in live art. He has painted live at Funky Buddha Lounge, Butterfly Social Club, Betty’s Blue Star Lounge, Quennect 4, Barrio Arts Fest in Humboldt Park, Allstate’s ‘Keep the Drive’ campaign at the John Hancock building, the US Social Forum 2007 in Atlanta, and at Amnesty International & Insight Arts’ Jamnesty in 2008. In June of 2010, Hugo was featured on the cover of Extra Bilingual Newspaper. Hugo has a passion for design, typography, and visual art and is inspired by everyday people. |
